The Neoarchean was the last era of the Archean Eon, lasting from approximately 2.8 to 2.5 billion years ago. It was a pivotal period in Earth's history, during which the planet's continents became more stable, microbial life flourished, and the atmosphere began to change due to the activity of photosynthetic organisms. The Neoarchean laid the foundation for the dramatic environmental and biological changes that followed in the Proterozoic Eon.
By the Neoarchean, Earth's crust had cooled significantly compared to earlier Archean times, allowing large, stable continental masses known as cratons to develop. Many of these ancient cratons, including parts of those found in Africa, Australia, Canada, and Greenland, still form the cores of modern continents. Volcanic activity remained widespread, but it gradually became less intense than during earlier Archean eras.
The oceans covered most of the planet and were rich in dissolved iron and other minerals. Along shallow coastlines, vast colonies of cyanobacteria formed layered structures called stromatolites, some of which grew to several meters in height. These microbial communities carried out oxygenic photosynthesis, using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into organic matter while releasing oxygen as a byproduct.
Although oxygen production increased substantially during the Neoarchean, most of it reacted immediately with dissolved iron in the oceans, forming extensive banded iron formations (BIFs). As a result, atmospheric oxygen remained very low. However, by the end of the Neoarchean, oxygen had begun to accumulate in the atmosphere, setting the stage for the Great Oxidation Event, which occurred shortly after the beginning of the Proterozoic Eon.
The climate during the Neoarchean was generally warmer than today due to higher concentrations of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide. The Sun was also about 20% less luminous than it is today, yet these greenhouse gases helped keep Earth's oceans largely free of permanent global ice.
Life during the Neoarchean remained entirely microbial, with no plants, animals, fungi, or complex multicellular organisms. Cyanobacteria dominated shallow marine environments, while other bacteria and archaea inhabited volcanic regions, hydrothermal vents, and deep-sea ecosystems. These microorganisms played a crucial role in shaping Earth's atmosphere and geochemical cycles.
The Neoarchean ended approximately 2.5 billion years ago, marking the transition to the Paleoproterozoic Era. It represents one of the most important periods in Earth's history, as the widespread success of photosynthetic microbes transformed the planet's atmosphere and created the conditions necessary for the later evolution of complex life.
