Cryolophosaurus was a large theropod dinosaur that lived during the Early Jurassic Period, approximately 194–188 million years ago. It was discovered in Antarctica, making it one of the southernmost dinosaurs ever found and the first non-avian dinosaur described from the continent.
Cryolophosaurus had a unique bony crest above its eyes that curved backward across its skull. This unusual structure earned it the nickname "Elvisaurus" because the crest resembles the hairstyle of musician Elvis Presley. The crest was likely used for display, communication, or recognizing members of its own species.
It was a medium-to-large predator, reaching an estimated length of around 6–7 meters (20–23 feet). Cryolophosaurus had a long tail, powerful hind limbs, and sharp teeth suited for hunting smaller dinosaurs and other animals in its Antarctic environment.
During the Early Jurassic, Antarctica was not covered by permanent ice as it is today. It was part of the southern supercontinent Gondwana and had a cooler, seasonal climate with forests and diverse ecosystems.
