Corythoraptor was a small oviraptorosaur theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 72–66 million years ago. It was discovered in the Nanxiong Formation of Jiangxi Province, China, an area famous for its Late Cretaceous dinosaur fossils.
Corythoraptor had a distinctive tall, hollow crest on its skull, similar in shape to the casque of a modern cassowary. This crest may have been used for display, communication, species recognition, or possibly producing sounds. Its skull was toothless and equipped with a beak, suggesting it had a varied diet that may have included plants, seeds, fruits, eggs, and small animals.
Like other oviraptorosaurs, Corythoraptor was likely covered in feathers. It had long arms with clawed fingers, powerful hind legs, and a lightweight body. It reached an estimated length of around 2 meters (6.5 feet) and was likely an agile, bird-like dinosaur.
Its discovery helped scientists better understand the diversity of oviraptorosaurs, showing that these dinosaurs developed many unique head shapes and body features during the Late Cretaceous.
