Torvosaurus was a large megalosaurid theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period, approximately 153–148 million years ago. It was discovered in North America and Europe, with important fossils found in the Morrison Formation of the United States and the Lourinhã Formation of Portugal.
Torvosaurus was one of the largest predators of the Jurassic period. It had a massive skull filled with long, serrated teeth, powerful jaws, and a muscular body designed for hunting large prey. Unlike the later tyrannosaurs, it had relatively long arms with three clawed fingers.
Reaching an estimated length of 9–11 meters (30–36 feet) and weighing around 2–4 tonnes, Torvosaurus was among the largest carnivores of Late Jurassic ecosystems. It likely hunted large herbivores such as Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, and Lusotitan, using its strong jaws and claws to attack prey.
Two main species are known: Torvosaurus tanneri from North America and Torvosaurus gurneyi from Portugal. The Portuguese species was one of the largest known terrestrial predators from Jurassic Europe.
