Gigantoraptor was a massive oviraptorosaur theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 96–70 million years ago. It was discovered in the Gobi Desert of Inner Mongolia, China, and is one of the largest known members of the oviraptorosaur group.
Unlike many other large theropods, Gigantoraptor was likely omnivorous, using its toothless beak to consume a variety of foods such as plants, fruits, eggs, small animals, and possibly insects. Its long neck, powerful legs, and lightweight body structure gave it a tall and bird-like appearance.
Gigantoraptor could reach around 8 meters (26 feet) in length and may have weighed between 1.4–3 tonnes, making it far larger than its smaller relatives such as Oviraptor. It had long arms with clawed fingers and was likely covered in feathers, although direct feather fossils have not been found.
Its discovery changed scientists' understanding of oviraptorosaurs, showing that this group evolved from small, bird-like dinosaurs into some of the largest feathered dinosaurs known. Its unusual combination of massive size, feathers, and a beaked skull makes it one of the most unique dinosaurs ever discovered.
