Pectinodon was a small troodontid theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 66 million years ago. It was discovered in North America, with fossils found in areas such as the Hell Creek Formation, which represents one of the final ecosystems before the end-Cretaceous extinction.
Pectinodon was a member of the Troodontidae, a group of small, bird-like dinosaurs known for their relatively large brains, keen senses, and agile bodies. It had a slender build, long hind limbs, and a long tail that helped with balance while moving quickly.
Like other troodontids, Pectinodon likely had feathers covering much of its body. It possessed a narrow skull with many small, serrated teeth, suggesting it was an opportunistic predator that may have eaten small animals, insects, eggs, and possibly plant material.
Originally, many fossils of Pectinodon were classified under Troodon, but later studies suggested that the original Troodon fossils were too incomplete to identify properly. Because of this, several North American troodontid fossils have been reassigned to Pectinodon.
Pectinodon was relatively small, estimated at around 1–2 meters (3–6 feet) long, and represents one of the many small feathered dinosaurs that lived alongside giants such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops.
